Below are few characteristics that a firefighter should have in order to carry out his task properly.

1. Integrity is very important

All firefighters should have integrity. Additional details on this are provided at https://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Firefighters.aspx. When you go in the actual field, you will be seeing a lot of people and families who are experiencing the most saddest and lowest part of their lives. In the field, you will see and hear some things that should not be and you must have that sense of confidentiality for those things. Now, the firefighters are the only help that they can rely on, and as a firefighter you should be able to extend help to them in any way that you can. It doesn't matter what are the beliefs of the people around you, you just have to help them no matter what.

2. Compassion

Compassion is actually a partner of integrity. This mean that you should have a real desire to help fire victims. If you have the empathy and the compassion to help them, then you should be able to be there while they are recovering from the situation. You should be able to help them recover emotionally right after the accident. If you are able to successfully help them when it comes to the emotional side, the victims will surely remember how a good firefighter came into their lives.

3. Be an active listener

Listening is very important during this situation. A firefighter cannot be an active listener and a first responder ptsd if he has not been practicing this even before. When you are in the field, you will not just be listening to your own viewpoint but must seek to help and understand others too. Remember that you can only be effective if you work as a team. You should also open your ears for the victims to help and aid what they need. Bear in mind that you should be giving out utmost help and not your opinion or judgement towards the situation. If you lack in the listening skills, then you might just not help the team.
